Kenya took me on a visual and emotional journey through a beauty and grief I could've ever imagined. There was a secret waiting for me--a secret well worth the plane ride and the emotional shock of observing and touching real suffering. I had heard the words of the secret before, my whole life even, but their true meaning was hidden. Looking back, I feel like the people in Kenya were on a God-ordained mission for me to know the secret as much as I was there for them.
The people I encountered told me the secret in pieces, each with their own part to tell... Daniel, the 16 year old boy sharing a hospital bed and dying from AIDS told me a part while I held his hand. Joe, the hungry street kid and soccer prodigy whispered the secret as we passed the soccer ball. At an extremely impoverished elementary school, 100 beaming kids all told me the secret at the same time while I taught them ring-around-the-rosie.
Simon, the AFH Director, Martin Luther King Jr. of Kenya, told me every day. Really, everyone was revealing the secret in a unique way. The truth became unmistakable: we will never know the real beauty or significance of our life until we give it away. We have been born into the uncommon privilege of having the opportunity to genuinely touch a life and save it. For me, the revelation of my significance came as I was obedient to take the journey and be present in it. I don't know what obedience is for you, but I do know it will come with a gift more precious than I could ever tell you.
